trucks ratios
Allison provided TRC with two equally spec'd medium-duty trucks for review and verification prior to testing. One of the trucks was equipped with an Allison 2200 HS and the other truck was equipped with a comparable automated manual. video2

ACCELERATION TESTS
Patented Allison torque converter technology allows Allison Automatics to provide smooth, full-power shifts that produce superior acceleration and greater efficiency.

The chart below shows that the Allison Automatic used less fuel and accelerated faster than the automated manual.
chart2
While achieving a higher average speed, the Allison Automatic used proportionally less fuel as shown in the chart below.
Higher average speeds provided by Allison Automatics make it possible for more work to be accomplished over the course of a day.

CRUISE TESTS
At many cruise speeds below 40 MPH, the Allison Automatic-equipped truck produced significantly lower engine RPM and used less fuel versus the automated manual-equipped truck.
In the upper range, the two transmissions have nearly the same internal ratio. This produced comparable engine RPMs at higher cruise speeds and resulted in comparable fuel consumption.
chart4
The cruise test illustrates that the most critical component to achieving maximum fuel economy during cruising is engine RPM. Whether a truck cruises at 10, 40 or 65 mph, having the engine operating at its recommended RPM is the best way to optimize fuel consumption.
Allison Automatics' torque converter and internal gear ratios help produce lower engine RPM at many speeds below 40 MPH resulting in less fuel used and better MPG. And, with most medium-duty truck applications this is where much of the operational time is spent.
SUMMARY:
ALLISON AUTOMATICS CAN MAKE YOUR MILES MORE PROFITABLE
With smooth, full-power shifts providing faster acceleration than a manual or automated manual transmission, Allison Automatics allow vehicles to achieve higher average vehicle speeds. Your truck and driver cover more miles in less time. Accomplishing more deliveries per day – getting more work done per gallon of fuel through better acceleration – means your vehicles will be more fuel-efficient.
And when cruising, Allison Automatics optimize the powertrain to yield comparable or better fuel economy.
So, if you want the best combination of fuel economy and efficiency to help make your trucks more productive and profitable, specify Allison Automatics on your next truck order.
