| RACING TEAM DEPENDS ON ALLISON
Fontana, CA - Besides the Indy 500, the racing teams that compete in the IndyCar Series travel to various racetracks around the country. Along with the massive team transporters that haul the cars and equipment, most race teams also have a motor coach that serves as its hospitality and meeting center at the track.
Mike Fink and his wife, Sandy, are in charge of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing's motor coach. "We drive and set it up for the use of the team's owners and drivers to do team meetings, meet with sponsors, go over car set up and such," says Mike.
"They have the inside of the coach to use for business to business dealings. This is a serious part of the racing industry," states Mike. "There are a lot of deals done here. It makes and breaks these teams."
Their coach is a 45-foot diesel pusher with an Allison Automatic and it tows a 23-1/2 foot trailer that houses a full commercial kitchen. "So we're just about as long as the semis you see out on the interstate," says Mike. "We prepare food for six of the IndyCar teams here on the circuit." Sandy adds, "I'd say we average between 600 and a 1,000 meals on a race weekend."
"We rely on this vehicle to get us to where we have to go. I mean, there's absolutely no spare time. The Allison transmission just gives you the piece of mind that you do have the reliability," says Mike
There are no excuses in this time-sensitive business. "If you were to have a breakdown on the road and you don't get to an event on time, then you've got hundreds of crew members that don't have meals," according to Sandy. "We're under contractual obligations for that. At all costs, you have to be there no matter what it takes."
"You can pull this 78,000 pound unit right up the Rockies at 14,000 feet going 65 miles an hour. It works well in any occasion," says Mike. "I mean, we run from east coast to west coast, from the Canada border down to southern Florida. Nothing really seems to affect this machine."
"I've driven six different coaches in the past 12 years. They've all had Allison transmissions in them. I've never once had a failure of any kind. The Allison transmission works phenomenal."
