Allison Automatics and IVECO Astra power global energy projects

Heavy equipment manufacturer turns to Allison fully automatic transmissions for world’s most challenging construction sites.

Turin, Italy, 2019 – For the energy industry, tapping into some of the world’s richest oil shale reserves or bringing power to a remote country requires modern machinery that can handle any size load under any condition.

Allison Transmission and IVECO Astra teamed up recently to supply two of the world’s most challenging job sites – the Attarat Um Ghudran oil shale mine and power plant project in Jordan and the Kinyerezi natural gas power plant in Tanzania – with vehicles that are up to the task.

Jordanian heavy hauler Orient Heavy Haulage added several heavy-duty IVECO tractors equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions to their fleet precisely for the vehicles’ performance capabilities.

The fully-automatic Allison transmission smoothly multiplies engine torque to deliver more power to the wheels, creating exceptional handling, maneuverability, and quick acceleration. The ease of operation from Astra HD9 tractors equipped with the fully automatic Allison transmission allows the driver to concentrate on road conditions without constantly worrying about gear shifting.

"Drivers towing over 300 tons of load must travel at a snail’s pace. They need a high capacity to overcome slopes over long distances and at extreme temperatures,” said Bruno Re, Application Engineer at Allison Transmission. “The Allison transmission performs these tasks very well," he added.

Astra vehicles are used to haul various heavy-duty equipment at the Jordanian power plant’s construction site, including a 327-ton steam generator. The tractors are capable of powering through tough terrain necessary to carve out the mouth of the mine, build boiler foundations and other infrastructure needs.
