Increasing Demand for Allison Transmission Propels the Safety Loader Market

Car carriers and safety loaders are shifting to fully automatic transmissions, focusing on driving convenience, economic feasibility, and fuel efficiency.

SEOUL, South Korea, August 2021 – Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional and electrified vehicle propulsion solutions and the largest global manufacturer of medium- and heavy-duty fully automatic transmissions for commercial and defense vehicles announced that car carriers and safety loaders are likely to select Allison Automatics for driving convenience, economic feasibility, fuel efficiency, power, productivity and other features.

Choi Hyun-sik, CEO of AMT Korea, which has been operating Car Carrier and Safety Loader businesses in Incheon since 2010, said that Allison’s fully automatic transmissions are the best transmission for safety loaders, providing the smoothest shifts, the best reliability and a range of options for technical support.

"I have recently purchased more units of Hyundai Mighty equipped with Allison’s fully automatic transmissions due to the increased demand for 4WD such as EVs and SUVs," said Choi. "As the EV and 4WD markets expanded, so did the demand for safety loaders."

Safety loaders are required when moving 4WD vehicles for towing and delivery. Currently, there are about 100 vehicles that Choi uses for safety loaders. He has more than 30 safety loaders equipped with Allison transmissions as of August 2021 and plans to purchase more than 40 additional units this year. Including vehicles purchased last year, more than 80% of the Hyundai Mighty vehicles he has purchased are equipped with Allison's fully automatic transmissions.

4WDs and EVs should be towed by a safety loader rather than a regular tow truck in case of an accident or breakdown. Currently, most of the market is occupied by light-duty trucks, and almost all of them are Hyundai Mighty.

"Safety loader drivers often use brakes repeatedly when driving. However, it is very tiring to change gears and operate clutches frequently while driving a manual vehicle. On the other hand, vehicles equipped with fully automatic transmissions have very smooth gear changes," said Choi. "Since drivers only have to keep their eyes on the road, it is comfortable to drive and the risk of accidents is low."

"The Allison automatic transmission not only provides excellent starting performance, but also achieves high efficiency," said Kyoungmee Lee, Regional Director of Allison Transmission Korea. "Allison Transmission will continue to provide the best after-sales service to the customers and help them improve their productivity.”
