Allison Transmission Shares its Progress in Waste Collection Activities at Pollutec Trade Fair

Allison will showcase its progress in waste collection activities at the Pollutec trade fair, with information on the results of a recent study on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and its fuel efficient solutions FuelSense® 2.0 and xFE.

LYON, France, October 2021 – Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional and electrified vehicle propulsion solutions and the largest global manufacturer of medium- and heavy-duty fully automatic transmissions for commercial and defense vehicles, is pleased to announce its presence at the Pollutec trade fair from October 12-15, 2021 where it will share its progress in waste collection activities.

In June 2021, Allison Transmission presented the results of a three-year study conducted with a waste collection fleet. The objective of this study was to compare, under real operating conditions, the total cost of ownership (TCO) of vehicles using an Allison fully automatic transmission with those using an automated manual transmission (AMT) for their entire lifespan (7 years). Based on the results of the study, Allison fully automatic transmissions demonstrated a calculated 2% TCO gain over the AMT solution. This type of TCO calculation did not take into account the higher tonnes collected (+9.3%) and the much more severe duty cycle for trucks equipped with the Allison transmissions. The difference in TCO lies in the advantages of Allison transmissions, including significantly lower maintenance costs and maximum uptime, while controlling fuel consumption.

In addition to this study, four vehicles were monitored during 25 shifts with the usual drivers, on identical routes, with the same journeys and the same types and masses of waste collected. The fuel consumption of vehicles equipped with the Allison transmission was measured to be nearly 1% below AMTs on this test.

Allison Transmission analysed the consumption data by putting them into perspective with the tonnes collected. Thus, by calculating, with the same data over three years, the consumption in liters per tonnes collected, the TCO gain reaches 6%.

Allison Transmission has also continuously optimized its fuel efficient solutions to meet the needs of waste collection users. Allison’s FuelSense® 2.0 software demonstrated fuel savings of up to 9% and a reduction of around 4,500 kg of CO2 during a six-month study on a waste collection fleet in Great Britain. At the heart of Allison’s FuelSense 2.0 software is DynActive® Shifting, innovative shift scheduling that uses an algorithm to choose the optimal shift point, based on vehicle specifications and environmental parameters, continuously delivering the ideal balance of fuel economy and performance.

Allison Transmission also recently introduced two new versions of its xFE fully automatic transmission. Compared to the standard 3000 Series™ transmissions, the new 3000 xFE™ and 3200 xFE™ can reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by up to 3.7%. The greatest gains are made at speeds below 20 mph (32 kph), depending on axle ratio, and above 45 mph (72 kph). “The xFE technology will have a very significant impact on the TCO of the fleets” said Stéphane Gonnand, Area Sales Manager France.
