Allison Transmission Strengthens Commitment to Fuel Consumption Savings and Electrification

With its fuel-efficient solutions, in particular FuelSense® 2.0 software and the fully automatic xFE transmission, Allison Transmission reinforces the total cost of ownership (TCO) benefits of its fully automatic transmissions. In addition, with its Allison eGen™ brand of hybrid electric and fully electric propulsion solutions, Allison Transmission is continuing to develop its offering for electrified vehicles.

France, November 2021 - Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional, electric hybrid and fully electric vehicle propulsion solutions, is pleased to announce its presence at the Solutrans trade fair which is being held from November 16 to 20, 2021. On this occasion, Allison Transmission will review the development of its solutions supporting fuel consumption savings and of its offerings for electrified propulsion solutions.

Allison Transmission has continuously optimized its offering and the total cost of ownership (TCO) of its fully automatic transmissions to meet the needs of the most demanding users. A three-year study with a French waste collection fleet demonstrated a reduction in TCO with the Allison fully automatic transmission compared to an automated manual transmission. Additionally, FuelSense® 2.0 software demonstrated fuel savings in a six-month survey of a waste collection fleet in the United Kingdom this year. At the heart of Allison’s FuelSense 2.0 software is DynActive® Shifting, innovative shift scheduling that uses an algorithm to choose the optimal shift point, based on vehicle specifications and environmental parameters, continuously delivering the ideal balance of fuel economy and performance.

Allison Transmission also recently introduced two new versions of its xFE fully automatic transmission. Compared to the standard 3000 and 3200 Series transmissions, the new 3000 xFE™ and 3200 xFE™ can reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption by up to 3.7%. The greatest gains are made at speeds below 20 mph (32 kph), depending on axle ratio, and above 45 mph (72 kph). “The xFE technology will have a very significant impact on the TCO of the fleets,” said Stéphane Gonnand, Area Sales Manager France.

In terms of electrification, the manufacturer has developed an offer that has grown in importance in recent years.

As early as 2019, Allison Transmission acquired Vantage Power and AxleTech’s electric vehicle systems division.

In 2020, Allison Transmission launched the Allison eGen™ brand, which includes an offering of electric and electric hybrid propulsion solutions.

Allison’s eGen Flex™, launched in August 2020, is the initial product offering under the eGen brand. This hybrid electric propulsion system provides bus fleets with full electric engine-off propulsion and accessory power operation capability - ideal for zero-emission zones and depot operation, including when approaching, during, and leaving passenger stops for a quieter and healthier environment. It includes an innovative new drive unit, inverter and rechargeable energy storage system. The drive unit includes a disconnect clutch that enables engine-off capability.

Allison’s eGen Power™, launched in October 2020, is a series of zero emission electric axles for medium and heavy-duty commercial trucks. The eGen Power 100D features two electric motors, each capable of generating greater than 200 kilowatts of continuous power with a peak combined power of 648 kilowatts. It also integrates a two-speed gearbox within the central housing, enabling the high torque required to get heavy loads moving, while also offering the benefit of superior efficiency at cruise speed. The eGen Power 100D is capable of supporting up to a 10.4 tonne (23,000 pound) gross axle weight rating and also includes differential lock functionality.

In April 2021, Allison Transmission announced a strategic memorandum of understanding with Emergency One, the market leader in the United Kingdom in the manufacture, service and support of fire and rescue vehicles, to integrate the Allison eGen Power 100D electric axle in Emergency One's fire and rescue vehicle platform.

Since this summer, Allison has extended its offering with the eGen Power 100S, for medium and tandem-axle heavy-duty vehicles in North American markets, and the eGen Power 130D, a variant of the 100D, specifically designed for the European and Asia Pacific markets, where many commercial vehicles require a heavier 13 tonne gross axle weight rating. The eGen Power 130D maintains the same core components, performance, and differentiated value as the eGen Power 100D, including the power ratings previously mentioned for the 100D, but with increased axle weight rating capability.

Allison Transmission has also signed a comprehensive strategic Joint Collaboration Agreement with Hino Trucks on class 6, 7 and 8 BEV trucks for production in 2023. Hino announced Project Z in October 2020 and has continued collaborating with Allison since then in designing BEV solutions tailored for the North America medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicle markets.

Allison Transmission also signed a broad, global strategic collaboration partnership agreement with Jing-Jin Electric (JJE), a Chinese electrified propulsion leader in components, assemblies and systems for global automotive and commercial vehicle customers, to accelerate the development of industry-leading electrified powertrain solutions for global commercial vehicles.

To support the development of these solutions for electrified vehicles, Allison Transmission has expanded the electrification testing capabilities at its Vehicle Environmental Test Center, now called the Vehicle Electrification and Environmental Test Center (VE+ET). This state-of-the-art facility offers a wide range of repeatable, reliable and seasonally- independent vehicle electrification testing.

“Allison Transmission benefits from a strong experience in the commercial vehicle and coach and bus markets around the world, which allows it to develop relevant solutions based on a global analysis of user needs and trends in markets. Thanks to this approach, Allison has acquired a leading position in electrified propulsion systems to support customers in their energy transition," said Stéphane Gonnand, Area Sales Manager France.
