Allison Transmission Reaches 1,000 Fully Automatic Transmissions in Korean Refuse Market

Korean OEMs specializing in refuse collection, including AM Specialty Vehicle, Samneung and Tongyang 21, trust Allison Automatics.

SEOUL, Korea, October 4, 2023 – Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional and electrified vehicle propulsion solutions and the largest global manufacturer of medium- and heavy-duty fully automatic transmissions for commercial and defense vehicles, today announced that cumulative sales of its fully automatic transmissions for refuse fleets have exceeded 1,000 units since entering the market six years ago.

In 2017, Allison first delivered 2000 SeriesTM fully automatic transmissions for Hyundai Mighty refuse trucks and since then sales have increased year-over-year. Allison's share of the Korean refuse truck market is approximately 25 percent, up 6 percentage points from the previous year. Allison expects to sell more fully automatic transmissions in the Korean refuse market in 2023 than ever before.

Allison's credibility in the refuse truck market is based on the many advantages of fully automatic transmissions. Drivers of automatic trucks experience less fatigue because they don't have to operate gears and clutches. Fully automatic transmissions offer durability and productivity that allow fleets to collect more refuse in the same amount of time. They also offer impressive fuel savings for the demanding duty cycles of refuse applications, with no special maintenance costs other than regular filter and fluid changes.

As a result, refuse fleets are increasingly turning to Allison-equipped vehicles in Korea’s light- and medium-duty truck market including Hyundai Motor Company's PAVIS 280 horsepower and Mega Truck.

The leader in Korea’s light-duty truck market is the Hyundai Mighty equipped with the Allison 1000 xFETM transmission. Allison fully automatic transmissions account for more than 50 percent delivered in the Hyundai Mighty this year.

Allison collaborates with specialty vehicle companies that specialize in refuse collection, including AM Specialty Vehicle, Samneung and Tongyang 21.

"Refuse trucks must repeatedly perform start-stop operations, up and down hills, and through narrow streets to collect garbage," said Daeyong Sung, an Officer in charge of Refuse Trucks at Gyehwa-myeon of Buan-gun in Jeollabuk-do. "Given these driving conditions, we believe an automatic refuse truck with a fully automatic transmission is the answer."
