Allison Presents Sustainable Mobility Solutions at Ecomondo

Allison Transmission, the preferred choice of sanitation departments around the world, highlights latest innovations, including its family of fully electric axles and fuel agnostic transmissions, to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

TURIN, Italy, November 2023 - Allison Transmission, known for high-performance fully automatic transmissions for commercial vehicles, participated in Ecomondo. Trond Johansen, Allison’s new EMEA Sales Manager, and Simone Pace, Italy Sales Manager, Allison, met with the press and customers alongside Fausto Rebuffoni, General Manager of Ofira Italiana, Allison's long-standing distributor in Italy.

Allison displayed a cutaway of an 3000 Series™ transmission, suitable for vehicles with engines up to 276 kilowatts (370 horsepower) and one of the most widely used transmissions in the municipal and waste collection sectors. In addition to refuse collection, Allison powers a variety of vocations from medium- and heavy-duty transportation to earthmoving and from buses to the emergency and firefighting sectors.

"Based on feedback from our customers, Allison's reliability and improved total cost of ownership (TCO) are the main reasons why municipal services companies choose Allison when selecting transmissions for their vehicles," said Johansen.

Allison’s improved TCO has been proven through a number of field trials. A recent agreement with France's third-largest private waste collection company, Poly-Environement, of the Derichenbourg Group, resulted from comparative fuel economy tests between 12 vehicles with an automated manual transmission (AMT) and seven with an Allison fully automatic transmission for a year, during shifts with 1,100 bin pickups per day. The maintenance cost evaluation covered a three-year period. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of Allison transmissions, whose TCO including all parameters showed a two percent cost reduction compared to the AMT’s.

"Allison boasts exceptional productivity in heavy-duty applications and urban cycles,” said Pace. “This has made it the preferred choice for the largest waste collection fleets in our country, from North to South, with results that over time repay the initial choice and lead to proven performance by Allison in both large and small cities.”

Solutions for efficient fuel consumption and reduced emissions
In recent years, Allison has focused on developing innovative solutions to reduce fuel consumption and emissions without sacrificing productivity, as in the case of xFE (extra fuel economy) technology. This 'fuel economy' is the result of new transmission ratios designed to get more value out of every fill-up. In practice, the xFE transmission models are designed to lock up the torque converter at lower speeds, precisely because of the constant gear changes and lower average fleet speeds. This means that locking occurs much sooner and vehicles run longer at the speeds where they are most efficient.

For even greater savings, xFE uses FuelSense® 2.0, a unique set of electronic controls that guarantees fuel savings of up to 6 per cent.

"The xFE technology is now offered to OEMs and this important innovation offers a better balance between fuel efficiency and performance, especially for vehicles working in waste collection and street cleaning. In fact, the technical, mechanical and electronic improvements of these new xFE automatic transmissions combined with the latest generation of engines with both diesel and gas power supply ensure maximum efficiency and environmental sustainability, favouring their use even in city centres" says Pace.

Recently, the Eurometropolis of Strasbourg in France chose Allison transmissions to lower emissions as part of the implementation of the LEZ (Low-Emission Zone). Beginning in January 2023, the city has accelerated the renewal of its refuse collection fleet, which now consists of 300 vehicles, 100 of which have Allison automatics. This is an unprecedented investment; already in the coming months the city will receive 35 new vehicles with Allison automatics and the renewal will continue until 2025.

Allison's fully electric axles
As the commercial vehicle industry continues its transition to electrification, Allison continues the expansion of its lineup, which now includes electric propulsion solutions alongside its conventional drivetrains that, when paired with alternative drives, enable more sustainable transportation.

"Sustainability has always driven the development of new technologies in the industry, and Allison offers new and conventional products for electric propulsion of heavy-duty vehicles, such as the fully electric eGen Power® axle," said Johansen.

First introduced at IAA in 2022, the eGen Power 130S is designed specifically to support the heavier 13-ton gross axle weight rating, which is often required by commercial vehicles in Europe and Asia Pacific markets. The 130S uses a single motor to generate 225 kilowatts of continuous power, with a peak power of 325 kilowatts, and 26,000 newton-meters of torque at the wheels. Newly on the market is the eGen Power 100S, the first single-motor variant of the electric axle range, designed for heavy 6x4 tractors, heavy duty trucks and medium school buses.

The latest addition to Allison's family of competitively electric axles, the eGen Power 85S, has already been integrated into the fully electric Isuzu Novo VOLT bus displayed at the latest Busworld Europe in Brussels.
