Australia extracts roughly 2.6 billion metric tons of mineral material each year, making it one of the world’s top five mining countries by total production volume. Moving that much material across steep, unsealed and often remote sites demands equipment that can work relentlessly under sustained loads. As local mining operations look to move more material while controlling fuel, maintenance and downtime costs, Western Australia-based Brooks Equipment has introduced a compelling new offering to the 40-to-45-tonne articulated dump truck class.
Parent company Brooks Group Australia is a multidivisional enterprise that has supported Australia’s mining and civil sectors for almost 50 years. In 2020, it launched specialist division Brooks Equipment to meet a growing demand for new, customized machinery. Less than four years later, Brooks Equipment secured the exclusive distribution rights for XCMG, an ambitious original equipment manufacturer (OEM) hailing from the world’s largest mining economy – China.
With sole responsibility for the country’s core mining states – including Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland and South Australia – Brooks Equipment has already brought 16 of the new XCMG XDA45 articulated dump trucks into the country for sale, with several also available for dry hire through the Brooks Hire division. “With almost 50 years in the business, we maintain our reputation by providing mining operations with reliable, durable and efficient equipment that is easy to service,” says Nathan Fenemer, General Manager for Brooks Equipment. |

Built for challenging terrain
The XCMG XDA45 dump truck is made specifically for steep grades, heavy loads and remote operations. Its articulated design connects the front cab and rear dump body through a pivoting hinge, helping the truck navigate uneven terrain while carrying a gross vehicle mass of 71 tons.
Both the XCMG XDA45 articulated dump truck and the XCMG XDA45 32 kL articulated water truck – used for dust control, road compaction and fire safety – are powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM471 engine rated at 390 kW, paired with Allison 4800 Off-Road Series™ (ORS) fully automatic transmissions with built-in hydraulic retarders. Together, these features offer operators improved control on long, steep downhill mining runs.
A fully automatic transmission is particularly well suited to an articulated dump truck because it is designed to deliver reliable performance in demanding off-road environments. Smooth, uninterrupted power delivery helps the truck maintain traction on uneven, muddy or steep terrain, where manual gear changes – and even some automated manual transmissions – can reduce momentum.
One of the biggest advantages of the Allison transmission in the XCMG XDA45 is its torque converter, which multiplies engine torque at low speeds and gives the truck strong pulling power when starting with a full load, climbing hills or operating on soft ground. Smooth gear changes also reduce shock loads through the driveline, lessen driver fatigue and help extend the life of components such as axles, driveshafts and differentials.
“Paired with the Mercedes-Benz engine, the XCMG XDA45 has a robust driveline, and the proven reliability of the Allison transmission helps keep our trucks working for longer, which reduces unplanned downtime and unexpected operating costs,” says Fenemer. “The XCMG fleet is also well supported by Allison’s authorized distributor, Heavy Automatics, and Allison’s broader service network, helping us to maximize operational uptime.”

Early signals suggest a strong return on investment
Fenemer says when compared with other major manufacturers in the 40-to-45-tonne class, the XDA45 offers equivalent or slightly higher payload capacity at a competitive price. Customer feedback also indicates that the truck has performed well.
“Feedback has been extremely positive to date, which didn’t really come as a surprise to us. One of our customers operating in the gold fields has been hiring an XDA45 and worked it incredibly hard in both summer and winter conditions. It was able to keep up in both environments, and the driveline held strong with even power distribution from the transmission to the axles in wet off-road conditions. They clocked more than 4,000 hours without any issues. The truck is certainly meeting performance expectations.”
While the XCMG XDA45 is relatively new to the Australian market, early adopters’ experience with the dump truck indicates it is well-specified and performs well at an attractive price point. Its sustained durability and success will ultimately define how effective the Chinese challenger brand can be in delivering long-term value for Australian operators.
