Allison Transmission Presents Solutions for Reduced Fuel Consumption and Emissions at IFAT 2024

Allison Transmission to exhibit a broad range of technologies, from fuel-agnostic propulsion solutions to Allison eGen Power® fully electric axles for municipal and refuse collection vehicles.

SLIEDRECHT, The Netherlands, April 3, 2024 – Allison Transmission, a leading designer and manufacturer of conventional, electric hybrid and fully electric vehicle propulsion solutions, will showcase its product range at IFAT 2024 (May 13-17, Munich, Hall C6, Stand 250). Allison offers a wide range of propulsion solutions including fully automatic transmissions compatible with alternative fuels and its growing eGen Power® family of fully electric axles, all well suited for refuse and municipal vehicles. Allison is the preferred choice for the largest refuse fleets in Western Europe.

Allison eGen Power® family of fully electric axles

Allison’s eGen Power® family of fully electric axles replaces the vehicle’s traditional driveline and offers easy installation and integration into existing vehicle chassis. eGen Power® includes fully integrated electric motors, a multi-speed gearbox, oil cooler and pump. The technology is compatible with full battery electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) and hybrid applications, and enables 100% of motor torque during regenerative braking. The eGen Power 100S electric axle was recently selected by Oshkosh Corporation for North America’s first fully integrated, zero-emission electric refuse truck. The 100S has been successfully integrated into their McNeilus® Volterra™ ZSL™ electric refuse truck. Each vehicle will be built with two 100S e-Axles in a tandem configuration.

Fuel-agnostic solutions

For internal combustion engine vehicles, Allison has continued to optimize its propulsion solutions to meet the energy efficiency needs of refuse and other municipal applications. Allison fully automatic transmissions are compatible with alternative fuels such as compressed natural gas (CNG), biogas and hydrogen, enabling fleets to achieve reduced emissions from internal combustion engine vehicles. For example, Abfallwirtschaftsbetriebe München (AWM) recently selected 34 Scania CNG refuse trucks with Allison 3000 Series™ transmissions to reduce emissions in Munich’s city centre. Currently, AWM operates a total of 184 refuse collection vehicles (RVCs), of which about 80% (almost 150 vehicles) are equipped with an Allison fully automatic transmission.

Fuel cell trucks powered by Allison

In the EU Interreg. HECTOR project, in which seven European regions are demonstrating how fuel cell-powered RCVs can help reduce vehicle emissions, two Allison-equipped vehicles are involved: Aberdeen's new hydrogen-powered Mercedes-Benz Econic RCV uses an Allison 3000 Series™ fully automatic transmission coupled to a 250 kilowatt (kW) Hyzon electric motor. In Herten, Germany, the HECTOR project fitted a DAF CF340 skip loader with an Allison 3200 fully automatic transmission powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

Efficient xFE™ technology

Allison offers its 3000 Series, the leading fully automatic transmission for municipal and refuse collection applications, with xFE fuel-saving technology. xFE technology has been proven to reduce fuel consumption by up to 3.7% compared to standard 3000 Series transmissions based on VECTO duty cycle calculations. This may vary by application or truck. The greatest gains are achieved at speeds below 20 mph (32 km/h), depending on axle ratio, and above 45 mph (72 km/h). For even greater savings, xFE uses FuelSense® 2.0, a unique set of electronic controls that can deliver fuel savings of up to 6%.

A cutaway model of the 3000 xFE™ will be on display at IFAT, featuring Allison’s latest fuel-saving software, Allison’s FuelSense® 2.0 with DynActive® Shifting. DynActive Shifting uses an algorithm based on factors like vehicle weight, road gradient, stop-start frequency and throttle use to optimize gear shift points for better fuel efficiency and performance. FuelSense 2.0 is especially beneficial for vehicles with frequent start-stop operations, making it ideal for municipal and refuse collection vehicles.

Recently, the Euro-Metropolis of Strasbourg in France chose Allison transmissions to reduce emissions as part of the implementation of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ). The city’s fleet now consists of 300 vehicles, 100 of which are equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions.

"The technologies we will be presenting at IFAT contribute to a more sustainable operation of refuse collection and municipal vehicles, specifically important in cities and residential areas where household waste is frequently collected," said Trond Johansen, Director European Sales, Allison Transmission. "We are proud to offer innovative solutions that meet the needs of our customers while helping to reduce emissions and fuel consumption."
